An Ounce of Prevention: An Incentive for Mindful Practices
Admittedly, starting a Yogatorial with concepts like self-discipline and self responsibility may be risky. Our culture tends to be viewed as gratification seeking and self-indulgent.
It is sadly evident that we do not live in a society known for self-control; however, self discipline and self-regulation are essential in creating and maintaining a health-supporting lifestyle.
The intention of mindbody health and wellness is to positively reinforce each of us in our commitment to personally establish and maintain healthy choices and habits.
Our culture, for too long, has placed responsibility for health and wellness on professionals to “fix us” when the need arises and it arises too often. In contrast mind/body health practitioners continue to encourage that we become more preventive and participatory for the sake of our own health and healing.
Contemporary lifestyle factors (sedentary behavior, nutrient poor diet, and lack of stress management skills) undermine our ability of fend off chronic diseases (i.e., heart disease and diabetes to name a few).
Lack of personal responsibility contributes to:
- Soaring health care costs
- Growing numbers of those under or uninsured
- Diminishing quality of care while spending more than any other nation
To form and maintain a healthy personal lifestyle one needs to be aware (to be mindful) of strengthening self-responsibility within our own life. Mastery in our own life is our capacity to consciously make healthy choices moment by moment, day by day, maintaining these healthy choices with consistency over time ultimately affecting the course of our own health and healing.
Nathaniel Brandon, psychotherapist, concludes:
“Self Responsibility is realizing we are the author of our choices and actions. We are responsible for our life and our well being.”
